White Paper: Humanity Index — Measuring What Truly Matters
June 2025 · Humanity Pact Secretariat

The Humanity Index offers a connected alternative to growth-centred measurement. It examines the conditions in which people live, who benefits from progress, who disappears from the data, and how social and ecological systems interact.

Its distinctive contribution lies in the architecture: People, Well-being and Environment are connected with Hope and Agency, statistical visibility, distributional analysis and accountability. The framework can support public dashboards, policy screening and place-based pilots.

Who is visible in the data — and who remains statistically absent?
How do housing, health, education, trust and environment reinforce one another?
Can people influence the decisions and futures that affect them?

Measuring Hope: Civic Trust and Mental Well-Being in Post-Pandemic Democracies (2025)
November 2025 · Myriam Taylor de Carvalho · Humanity Pact Think Tank

This paper treats hope not as optimism or mood, but as the capacity to imagine a better future, identify pathways toward it and participate in making it possible.

It proposes that public policy should examine whether institutions expand or constrict people’s sense of agency, possibility and trust in change — especially among communities experiencing exclusion, precarity or historical harm.

Do people believe a better future is possible?
Can they identify credible pathways toward it?
Do they have the resources, voice and institutional access to act?

Digital Sovereignty and Epistemic Pluralism for Sustainable Development (2025)
2025 · Myriam Taylor and Paulo Taylor

The paper argues that digital governance must protect more than privacy and infrastructure. It must also protect the right of communities and societies to shape how data, AI and knowledge systems represent them and make decisions about them.

Epistemic pluralism recognises that no single technical, commercial or geopolitical worldview should define the digital future. The approach calls for democratic oversight, community participation, local capacity and safeguards against extractive data practices and automated discrimination.

Who owns and governs the data used to make decisions?
Whose knowledge is recognised by AI systems — and whose is erased?
What forms of public and community power are required for digital self-determination?

Justice as Efficiency
2025 · Humanity Pact Think Tank

Full paper not yet available in this archive.

Read the publication announcement

This paper challenges the assumption that justice is a cost added after economic decisions. Preventing harm, repairing exclusion and improving human conditions can reduce long-term public costs, strengthen legitimacy and create durable value.

Humanity Bonds and Justice Credits are explored as financing mechanisms capable of linking capital to independently verified improvements in access, repair, inclusion and well-being — while requiring safeguards against financialisation, weak attribution and the commodification of rights.

How can finance reward prevention and repair rather than extraction?
Which outcomes can be verified without reducing justice to a narrow metric?
How should communities share power in design, governance and benefit?

Humanity Pact Think Tank · G20 South Africa 2025

The cooperation framework for 2025–2035 accompanies the four policy contributions in the Think Tank’s public G20 Social submission account.
